Sports Programs

PAL offers a wide range of organized sports throughout the year. For each sport, PAL will set up the proper number of teams for the appropriate age groups depending on the kids who sign up. There will be at least one adult coach per team who will be teaching good sportsmanship, teamwork, and self-discipline to kids of all ages through focused sports play in a safe environment. Kids will be expected to go to organized practices set up and will participate in various leagues and tournaments through PAL. It is FREE for kids to participate in any of the organized sports. Equipment and facility are all provided by PAL and its partners.

After School Tutorial

The goal is to help students between the ages of 8 to 17 with homework. The purpose is to assist children with schoolwork where they may be struggling. To alleviate some of the pressure off parents when the child gets home. To help children navigate computers and reinforce skills taught in school. The outcome is that children won’t become frustrated to the point of giving up and will receive assistance where needed. Children will have time to play and participate in activities after completing their homework for the day. The presence of Stockton tutors will reinforce the students to work hard and pursue their dreams. Stockton student will not only assist as tutors but will also try their best to be role models for the kids. They will try their best to guide the students into getting a college education.

Days:
January through May and September through December.
Every Monday and Thursday from 3:00 pm till 5:00 pm.

Aquaponics

The goal is to provide job-training and life skills to students. Students may become mentors themselves as they grow as responsible adults. The purpose is to help students build, construct, maintain greenhouse, while learning any number of tasks from nurturing and harvesting crops to caring for livestock, and marketing produce. The outcome is to gain occupational skills, future employability, and leadership training.

Basketball

40-50 participants per sport from the ages of 8 to 15.

The purpose is to provide a structured platform for sports activities where players can improve their athletic skills. The outcome is that children who otherwise would not participate in school or community sports now can take part and excel in those sports with the help of training. To build confidence while learning the values of good sportsmanship. The measurable outcome is that each child will receive an award or certificate of participation. Winners receive trophies along with superlative awards. In both sports, the Jamar Reynolds Character Award is our biggest award; it represents former PAL worker and college student Jamar Reynolds. The award is presented to the athlete who displays great talent and ability while at the same time showing respect for coaches. He must be a team leader with a good moral character on the playing field.

Schedule:
January through March on Monday’s from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Flag Football, February through April, every Tuesday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Boxing

The purpose is to keep participants healthy and in shape while teaching them self-control, discipline and enhancing their overall strength. To compete in and to be following USA boxing and the Mid-Atlantic boxing association regarding competition and safety measures. The goal and the outcome is to teach youth and adults the art of amateur boxing and self-defense in a meticulous professional atmosphere.

Community Theater Project

The purpose is to provide quality entertainment geared towards adults of the Atlantic City community in a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. The outcome is to provide the adults of Atlantic City a place to go and have a good time while enjoying professional style entertainment. Every year the students perform a play during Black History Month. The measurable outcome is the children of the PAL programs will benefit from the donations raised from the ticket prices and concession.

Days: One Saturday per month from 7:00 pm till 9:00 pm

AC PAL Cricket Showcase

The purpose is to teach the value of sportsmanship, individual participation, teamwork, the thrill of winning. The outcome is to impact the lives of young children by providing a program that builds character, teamwork, respect, and promote healthy choices through the game of Cricket. The measurable outcome is to bring communities together, especially where we encourage volunteer contributions of time and skills from parents and friends.

Dance

The goal of this program is for the group to work interdependently toward a common goal, investing resources into maintaining conformity among members while finding solutions and achieving goals. The purpose is to create awareness of limitations; Team development (sort things out, set purpose, set rules, execute job, and then conclude), Develop creative expression. The outcome will be: Team composition, team structure, organizational rewards

Drum Core

Through proactive participation PAL students will learn: Personal, Social and Emotional Skills, Creativity, Ingenuity and Quick Thinking, Cooperation vs. Competition. The goal is to compel more students to participate. Our goal is to develop teamwork, respect, community and integrity among participants. The outcome will produce stunning enhanced skill results in: communication, cooperation, creativity, confidence, inclusion, unity.

Education Opportunity 

To educate children in computer technology, mathematics, history, social skills, time, money, and anger management. To expose children to the skills mentioned above at a young age so they may become competitive in and outside of their classroom. To stimulate the mental capacity of each participant. The goal is to instruct 10-20 children – per session – every Wednesday, (September-June) As an outcome, the children will have a greater understanding of all the above. They will be provided with the opportunity to become well-rounded individuals and ultimately productive citizens of our society. The measurable outcome is that each child will receive a certificate of completion for the program. Those who are considered exceptional have access to other opportunities.

ESL

The class will focus on grammar, listening, vocabulary, reading and writing. This program will increase the English language proficiency of students so they can attain academic standards and achieve success in the classroom and community. This class is designed to help students learn about skills needed for everyday life in the United States. The outcome is to accelerate student achievement, to eliminate racial disparities in achievement, to create positive school and district culture, to foster innovation

Explorer Cadet Program

The Atlantic City Police Explorer Program offers training to young adults; ages 12-18, who are interested in a career in the Law Enforcement Profession. The purpose is to teach young adults the values such as self-discipline, self-confidence, drug resistance, self-respect, etc. The program is designed to provide Law Enforcement training and experience to the explorer cadet through mentoring, classroom instruction, and hands-on training. The program engages its cadets into a community through an assignment, which requires for them to participate in at least one Community Service Project every month. It benefits all participants by instilling in them skills of leadership, teamwork, and volunteerism while teaching them discipline, self-confidence, and fair play.

Girl Scouts

The goal of this program is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. The program includes girls from the ages of…..?? The purpose is to teach the power of girls together. To help girls develop their full individual potential; relate to others with increasing understanding, skill, and respect. As an outcome, Girls leave the program with values that guide their actions and provide the foundation for sound decision-making and contribute to the improvement of society through their abilities, leadership skills, and cooperation with others.

Days: 2nd and 4th Tuesday of September and June from 4:30pm till 5:30 pm.

Health & Fitness

To keep children fit and to educate them on the importance of living a healthy life. To enhance motor skills, balance, agility, strength and speed. As an outcome, the health and fitness training program will educate students on how to live a healthy lifestyle. This education will allow them to select their food intake better and will guide students towards healthy fitness activities.

Days: Monday ages 8-11 and Tuesday ages 12-16. January through April.

Little League Baseball

To teach the fundamentals of baseball while instructing young boys and girls in life skills that relate to the game. We further stress the importance of being a team player and the values of good sportsmanship. As an outcome, children leave the program (Some after four years) with a basic knowledge of the game. Interaction with others will hopefully allow them to know and celebrate the differences and similarities in us all. Many will become life-long friends. Children will receive awards for participation. Superlative awards are also given out.

Meal Program

The goal is to feed 50-75 children, at least twice a week. The purpose is to provide each child with a nutritiously balanced meal after school, while educating students on world hunger issues because a significant number of children do not have access to a nutritious meal daily. As an outcome, children will be fed a healthy meal at least twice a week, which will allow them to perform efficiently at school and home while completing homework etc.

Mentor Program

To introduce and provide educational, cultural and spiritual experiences that will improve and change the quality and the course of the lives of everyone. To have the male and females in separate settings to conveniently discuss issues that deal directly with them. The program helps them discover themselves and their surroundings. To accompany them on at least two significant outings (one educational and cultural and one fun-filled). As an outcome, youth between ages as mentioned above will be able to clearly recognize situations that are both helpful and harmful to their future and the lives of those around them. They will also have an appreciation and respect for their environment, family and authority. Further, they will have the knowledge and motivation to explore opportunities beyond Atlantic City.

Piano Lessons

To provide easy access and a joyful environment that will inspire students towards music education. Additionally, help students keep a positive outlook when facing difficult tasks. Ultimately benefit them with their school lessons. Numerous studies available show students who received piano lessons scored 34% higher than their non-musical counterparts in tests measuring spatial-temporal reasoning, which is the brain function used to understand math, science and engineering. As an outcome it will raise self-esteem, increase coordination, help students to concentrate, helps students to become well-rounded.

Soccer

The program is designed to introduce the Game to the children and develop their athletic skills, promote sportsmanship and foster teamwork. Additionally, we stress academic achievement and physical well being. To promote, foster, and perpetuate the game of soccer for the children of the City of Atlantic City. Our goal is to make the program more accessible by expanding training and matches to the many park facilities located nearer to the downtown area. The measurable outcome is that the children become more enthusiastic and motivated. Gain greater confidence and self-worth. Become more organized and effective. Learn more, be more, and do more. Make better decisions. Have a greater purpose and direction in soccer and life. 

Summer Day Camp

To facilitate a maximum of 100 Children. To provide students with a fun-filled educational summer experience. Children will receive knowledge and training in the fields of Health, Physical Education, Self-Awareness, Theater, Arts & Crafts, and Computers. Lunch will be served daily. Trips and events will be scheduled for each Friday. At the end of the camp, parents and guest will be treated to a final show which will incorporate all the above. Each camp participant will receive an Atlantic City PAL Day Camp t-shirt with the purpose identifying their affiliation on trips and outings. They will further receive a certificate or trophy recognizing their participation in the program. Those who stand out will also receive an award recognizing them for “Camper of the Week.

Tennis

To engage the youth community to inspire on the court, in the classroom and in the community. Set in motion a lifetime pursuit that fosters personal development and growth, self-confidence, a sense of mastery, and health and fitness. Experience support from trained coach-mentors, who build consistent relationships, a sense of belonging, and a welcoming community. Engage in developmentally appropriate interests and challenges through a curriculum of physical activity, life-skills development and leadership opportunities.

Wrestling

To teach discipline, self-esteem, team building and respect for others. To prepare participants to compete in several out of state competitions. To foster the comprehensive development of student-athletes by providing the resources to support an athletic program and an academic tutoring program.
